Bureka Making: Our Delicious Burekas!
This delicious Turkish pastry is a Jewish Sephardic dish and was a favorite cuisine of the Ottoman Empire. The recipe has been handed down from generation to generation and continues to delight pallets to this day.
The light and flaky dough is baked with a variety of fillings: potato, spinach, rice, eggplant and ground beef. Each flavor has its own unique seasoning and distinct taste. Enjoy for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Join the OVS Sisterhood as they make these delicious burekas every Tuesday morning at 10AM and stay for lunch following baking to hear their amazing stories, $1 for workers, $3 for guests!
Last summer, we were visited by members of the Southern Foodways Alliance oral history workshop who wrote this fantastic blog about their experience at OVS.
The dynamic foodways team followed that up with a video of the Sisterhood baking in 1990 and in 2016 - how things change, yet remain the same. Click here for the video and enjoy!
There was also a podcast released all about our "pie by another name" - Burekas - here!
