Seder Supplement

Each year, Jewish organizations from around the world send out “Seder Supplements” that can be used to enhance our Passover Seders. These items are normally relevant and represent one of many causes near and dear to our communities’ hearts. This year, I’ve written one for the OVS community that deals with the ongoing war in Israel and the hostages in Gaza. In thinking through what to do for this supplement, I thought of different rituals that could be incorporated. Perhaps we should set an extra seat for the hostage who is absent from Seder this year. Perhaps we could get a dog tag for each person at the table to wear during the Seder. Perhaps we could stand and sing Hatikvah at some point.

I thought of all these and then chose not to make them the supplement. The empty seat struck me as too dramatic and too hard to stomach. It also dawned on me that some of us are celebrating our first Pesach without a loved one, and as such we already have an “empty chair.” The dog tags seemed great but there’s not enough time for us to order enough for everyone.

We already sing Hatikvah at our Seder every year. So, I’ve come to another ritual I’m attaching to this message. I hope it will add meaning and depth to your Seder this year. In addition to this supplement, I recommend Sephardic Jews consider dipping falafel in hummus after the Hillel sandwich while discussing Israel. Ashkenazic Jews should dip Israeli olives in olive oil mixed with lemon juice and have the same discussion.

BBYO Haggadah

I don’t speak about it all that often, but BBYO was transformational for me. I can safely tell you I’m a rabbi today in large part because of the great experience I had and how much I grew over the course of my years in BBYO. Earlier this year, I was honored to receive a request from BBYO to contribute to a Haggadah they were publishing to celebrate their 100th anniversary. I love Passover, I love Haggadot, and I love BBYO so this was a real treat. The Haggadah was just published and I am pleased to share it you. My article is on pages 123-124. I hope you find it useful for your Sedarim.

Chag Pesach Sameach,
Rabbi Hearshen
