Enter our first ever Bureka Bakeoff! 
A maximum of 12 individuals or teams will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. We can't wait to taste the entries.

Rules & Guidelines
  • You can enter as an individual or with a team of up to 4 people.
  • The competition is limited to a maximum of 12 individual contestants or teams, which will be accepted in the order the applications are received.
  • All individual contestants, or at least 2 team members, must be 18 years of age or older.
  • OVS will supply each contestant/team with the same amount of prepared and pre-measured dough made from the renowned OVS recipe. Each contestant or team will use it to make 24 burekas with their unique filling and design (shape, edges, etc.) Some of the burekas will be for the tasting and some will be raffled off to support OVS.
  • All fillings must be either dairy or parve.
  • Each contestant/team will make an extra 4 cups of filling to be baked in one 9x13 pan for crowd tasting.
  • To enter, each contestant/team will need to provide their complete recipe, including a detailed ingredient list and complete directions, by March 1. Recipes will be published in a booklet and distributed at the event.
  • OVS will supply a basic pantry of ingredients. Once we receive your recipe, we will let you know what ingredients specific to your recipe you will be responsible for buying. You must bring all ingredients to OVS on Wednesday night, March 20, for kashrut approval. February 12 - Contest Opens

March 1 - Entry Deadline & Recipes Due

March 20 - Ingredient Check-in

March 24 - Bakeoff Day
1:30 pm - Arrival at OVS

3:30 pm - Burekas & Filling in the Oven

4:00 pm - Judging Begins

Max 4 members per team. At least 2 team members must be 18 years or older.
RECIPE

OVS will create a collection of all Bakeoff recipes to be shared with the community. Please take care to provide a complete, easy-to-follow recipe with a list of ingredients and instructions.

Recipe must be emailed to Nicole.Feldman@orveshalom.org by March 1, 2024.
(Your application is considered complete only once OVS has received the recipe.)
EQUIPMENT

In order to maintain OVS kashrut, do not bring any utensils, tools or equipment to the competition. 

The following equipment will be available in the kitchen:

  • Large baking sheets
  • Parchment paper
  • 9x13 pans for the extra filling
  • Large, medium and small mixing bowls
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Chef's knives
  • Paring knives
  • Large mixing spoons
  • Spatulas
  • Towels or paper towels
  • 3 inch round pastry cutters (finished burekas can be any shape as long as they are about 3 inches each so you have enough dough to produce 24 burekas)
