Deaths & Funerals

At Congregation Or VeShalom, we honor the sanctity of life by supporting our members with care and compassion through times of illness, loss, and mourning. Guided by Jewish tradition, our community is here to help you navigate these moments with dignity.

End-of-Life Support

If a loved one is seriously ill or in hospice, please contact the OVS office as soon as possible. Rabbi Hearshen provides spiritual support, hospital visits, and guidance for families making difficult decisions. He is also available to perform Vidui (final prayers) for those nearing the end of life.

Immediate Steps After a Death

You are not alone. When a loved one passes, contact Dressler’s Funeral Home first, then notify OVS. If it’s after hours, select the emergency option to reach Rabbi Hearshen directly.

Funeral Planning and Burial

Rabbi Hearshen officiates funerals for OVS members (included with membership) and non-members (fee applies). He will meet with your family to plan a meaningful service. OVS burial plots are available at Greenwood Cemetery (included with membership), Arlington Cemetery, and Dunwoody Cemetery. Contact the office to discuss availability or reservations.

Jewish Burial Practices

  • Tahara: Ritual preparation by our Chevra Kadisha.
  • Shomer: A guardian is recommended to stay with the deceased until burial.
  • Caskets: Plain wooden caskets without metal are required.
  • Timing: Funerals are held promptly when possible, excluding Shabbat and Jewish holidays.

The Funeral Service

Most funerals are graveside, and last 60-90 minutes. They include prayers, a eulogy, and Kaddish. Burial concludes once the casket is fully covered with earth.

Mourning Periods

  • Shiva (7 days): Intense mourning following burial.
  • Shloshim (30 days): Continuing remembrance following Shiva.
  • Year of Mourning: For parents, including 11 months of daily Kaddish. Rabbi Hearshen provides guidance and support throughout.

Unveiling and Memorials

We assist with gravestone selection and inscriptions. The unveiling typically takes place one year after burial.
