Michael Bouhadana

Do you know that Spain has a passed a law to grant citizenship to descendants of Sephardim expelled in 1492? This is an incredible benefit for many in our community.  If you have roots dating back to Spain, Congregation Or VeShalom is one of a few synagogues in the United States that can guide you through the Spanish citizenship process. Thank you to Dr. Mariana Montiel for all her efforts in bringing Mr. Luis Portero to speak to our congregation this Sunday at 12:00PM. Please join us for his presentation.

Mariana provided me with a brief background summarizing Mr. Portero’s work with the Spanish government.

Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón (former Minister of Justice in Spain), Gabriel Elorriaga (draftsman of the Bill in Congress), Isaac Querub (President of Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain [FCJE]) and Luis Portero (special counsel for FCJE) are the main drivers of Spain’s Act granting citizenship to descendants of Sephardim expelled in 1492.  Luis’ work was decisive in the passage of the law, as he represented the FCJE in Congress proceedings for the approval of the Bill both in Congress and in Senate.  Luis displayed numerous proposals with amendments and changes to the Bill, met and contacted with spokesmen of the main political groups in Spain’s Congress, senior officials of the Ministry of Justice and of the Dirección General de los Registros y del Notariado.

Mr. Portero will stay in Atlanta through Wednesday. If you have personal questions, please use the link in the announcement below to sign up for a private meeting with Mr. Portero. We are fortunate he is coming to speak to us and grateful of his dedication and time.

Finally, we hope to see everyone this Friday night and Saturday for Shabbat services.

Please continue providing me with feedback on your synagogue experience.

Shabbat Shalom,
