A Message from Rabbi Hayyim Kassorla

November 12th, 2009 by MLMaslia

The Imperative to Give Back

Judaism often focuses on the imperative to be involved in our communities – and make a difference. Throughout its history, Jews have acted upon this moral imperative to assist those in need.

As a community, we are encouraged to pursue social justice causes and help those less fortunate than ourselves – and offer a platform to voice the needs and concerns of the downtrodden or vulnerable.

Years ago, OVS began an initiative called “OVS Serves” which invited our members to serve the community-at-large. In that spirit, we plan to offer some volunteer opportunities throughout the year that will enable us to join together as a group and reach out to various organizations and communities – both Jewish and non-Jewish – that really require an extra hand in these challenging times.

While we all have busy lives, I encourage you to devote some of your time and energy to these programs, even if you have just a limited amount of time to spare. Just a few weeks ago, Congregation Or VeShalom was named 1st runner up among all Atlanta-area synagogues in terms of the number of volunteers represented at this year’s Atlanta Jewish Federation Phone-a-thon. Please consider offering some time next week, on Thursday, November 19, when we will visit the nearby Brighton Gardens Home to offer Thanksgiving smiles to seniors…or participating as a volunteer Pinch Hitter on December 25 to help hospital staff have the day off to spend with their families.

We learn that he who saves one person saves the entire world. These are opportunities for you to get involved because your personal involvement can – and does – make a world of a difference.
